This is a phrase someone a generation or two (or more) ago must have invented.
Some of my elders said it a lot when I was growing up. When I was a kid, I often pondered what it meant and tried to figure out how the saying ended.
"Don't let any grass grow under your feet..."
And then they'd stop. It was as if they always seemed to put a period there to end the sentence, but all I heard was an ellipsis.
One day when someone happened to say this in my hearing, with fresh enthusiasm I popped up with an answer.
"...if I do, I'll have to mow it!"
They laughed their tail off. I must have looked little-kid-cute or something.
By not allowing grass to grow under your feet you are essentially saying that you are staying diligent, choosing not to be inactive or idle and that you are not wasting time. College, like a lot of other areas in life, challenges us to keep moving, keep working and to keep making the most of every opportunity.
Let someone else be lazy, not you.
If you've got something to do you just go do it.
By having the grass grow under your feet you are either wasting time or creating more work for yourself because even if you get a fancy-dancy lawn mower with different speed modes you still have to take the time to crank it up and mow it across the lawn of underutilized opportunities.
Of course, there is a time for rest.
A time to turn in the paper or submit the exam and to walk away to do something more fun. There is a time to hang out with friends or family after the work is done. Indeed, there is something to be said for periodic episodes of relaxation.
And then the work begins again.
Don't let the grass grow under your feet.
